Abstract

This study is an attempt to describe briefly the evolution of history texts for high schools in the United States, beginning with the early nineteenth century and extending to the present time. It seeks to show that the objectives of the textbooks have changed to keep pace with the changing conceptions and ideals in the life of a people, whose past they attempt to interpret and whose present they try to explain.
