Description

In 2010 the United States spent 444 billion dollars treating many different cardiovascular diseases including strokes, artery diseases, high blood pressure, and other heart conditions. Currently the method used to synthesize dihydropyrimidinones, a Calcium Cannel Blocker (CCB), utilizes a variety of costly and dangerous catalysts. Through the research presented here however, it has been shown that silica gel, a cheap and rather safe catalyst, could be used in place of some of the less desirable ones. Characterization of the product (GC-MS, HNMR, and CNMR) have shown that with the desired product, a large amount of other unknown byproduct was formed.
