Popular music analysis is a crucial field of study because of its large importance in modern society. There has been a substantial amount of theoretical research devoted to prog rock over the past decade that has given important insight into one of rocks biggest contradictions. Prog rock's inclusion of cerebral complexities and art music makes it a perfect link between the high and low arts. Here I will discuss modern prog metal, a descendant of prog rock, from three angles: historical context, rhythm, and text painting.
