Description

The purpose of this research is to identify the perceptions that Butler University's students have about sexual assault. The issue of sexual assault has been gaining awareness throughout the University and within the media and thus research has been done on the common ideas and explanations for sexual assault such as she deserved it , most rapes happen by strangers , and she was asking for it (Testa and Livingston 2009:1359; McMahon 2010:4; Kahn et al. 2011:247; Ryan 2011:774). Previous literature has also explored the reasons for the presence of certain misconceptions surrounding sexual assault; however, there is little to no research that identifies the mindset and perceptions of how college students see sexual assault. Using Butler University as a case study, perceptions will be measured through a survey given to current students to gauge the presence of these ideas on Butler University's campus. These survey results will allow for better educational programming on college campuses about sexual assault.
