Synthesis of Hydroxycyclopentenones via Titanium Com.e.lexes

Abstract

The electronegativity difference in the titanium-carbon bond has provided a synthetic framework in the formation of a wide range of organic products. Hydroxycyc1opentenones are examples of such products and can be synthesized through a titanacyclobutene intermediate via a one-pot procedure. The process involves the incorporation of carbon monoxide into the titanacyclobutene ring with a concomitant addition of an alkyl halide in the presence of samarium diiodide. The synthetic utility of this reaction was explored by varying the alkyl halide. The results of such explorations show a variable tolerance for particular alkyl groups. The details of this project will be discussed.
