Abstract
The election of 1864 is one of importance to students of American history because it was fraught with many dangers to the Union. It might have been otherwise and had it been so the nation most certainly would have seen troublous times. Just how much truth is in the expression of Lincoln's that the country chose him so as not to "swap horses in the middle of the stream" can perhaps be better understood if we have a clearer understanding of the opposition he had in 1864.
