Description

Orthodox Christian iconography is unique; it is strikingly different from other types of art and other types of sacred art. Icons do not resemble Western art, secular art, or other forms of religious art. By just looking at an icon, one can see how it differs from other forms of artwork. There is something about these works that is specific only to Orthodox iconography. In this presentation, I will draw on the research I have conducted for my senior honors thesis. I will discuss exactly how Orthodox iconography is unique by speaking about the theological background of this art form as well as the specific artistic qualities, such as composition, light, and thematic material.
