Description
This research will examine different modes of engagement-Internet activism, academic feminism, and other social communication in the digital era. More specifically, it will explore the relationships between critical analysis, creative expression, and pragmatism. By looking at cultural phenomena like Twitter wars, fan fiction, hashtag politics, memes, and new media powerhouses-Buzzfeed, The Huffington Post, Gawker, and The Toast-I hope to unearth clues about nature of conversation in text-based communities. Through my own analysis and and exploration of the works of Donna Haraway, Eve Sedgwick and other Queer Feminists, I hope to create a model for a reparative kind of Internet engagement that marries empathy with knowledge and accountability.
