Description

Butler University Community Outreach Pharmacy (BUCOP) - A Partner Within IU-SOC

Indiana University Student Outreach Clinic is a completely student-run organization that provides free healthcare to neighborhoods in need on the East side of Indianapolis. The clinic is a multi-disciplinary effort with medicine, dentistry, law, social work, occupational therapy, physical therapy, public health, nursing, and pharmacy. BUCOP provides the clinic with medications free of charge in addition to medication counseling, management, and follow-up in collaboration with other disciplines.

Experiential learning, supplementary to didactic pharmacy education, prepares students for real-life experiences practicing within a collaborative model. This model centers on Butler University COPHS student learning objectives and the college's Distinction Based on Strength strategic plan, which emphasizes teaching with scholarly inquiry and multidisciplinary collaboration. This educational development is best achieved through delegation of clinic responsibilities based upon foundational classroom knowledge. First-year students as well as post-graduate students have a volunteer role within the clinic. Over the years, obstacles encountered in the pharmacy operations have fueled improvements to create more definitive roles based on student experience and ability. The clinic's structure provides a setting for research, pharmacy informatics, patient assistance programs understanding, and clinical assessment which is essential to anyone entering or currently practicing in the field of pharmacy.

This poster examines the role of first through fourth year professional pharmacy students, pharmacy residents post-graduate year one and two, and practicing pharmacists at BUCOP. BUCOP provides students with experiential opportunities based on students' particular level of foundational didactic coursework.
