Description

Concussion is a topic that is quickly gaining awareness and relevance among dancers. Limited research exists within this population unlike with that of other sports. Researchers studied undergraduate dance students’ knowledge and perceptions relative to concussion. An analysis of the survey results helped to better understand areas of needed education. Data gathered from one year to the next year were compared. Results consistently showed the dance program has a general familiarity with the symptoms and risks of concussion, yet are lacking knowledge related to prevention and management. It was also noted that their reputation as performers and their commitment to their peers seemed more important than personal health relative to concussion prevention and care. These findings support the adage that the show must go on, a phrase commonly heard throughout the dance and performance industries. The goal for the future of this study is to bring awareness and information to the dancers, teachers, and directors and to highlight the dangers of concussion for these artistic athletes.
