Description

As time moves forward, the United States is becoming more diverse. This will result in many more variations in food, customs, and culture. This will also bring numerous variations in lingual differences. The purpose of this literature review research project is to analyze similarities and differences between American English and Arabic to provide adequate accent modification therapy to a native Arabic speaking client. This literature review focused on speech and language patterns of the Arabic language. While researching this topic, it became apparent that there are numerous resources in the realm of accent modification for native Spanish speakers with American English as a second language, but there were very few resources on the Arabic language. It could be considered unethical to provide speech-language therapy to a native Arabic speaker with such a lack of resources. The literature that was found was used to implement therapy activities in areas of articulation, syllable and word stress, rhythm, pitch, and fluency. It is expected that over the course of this year, the client’s fluency and intelligibility will increase by receiving accent modification therapy. Data is being recorded during therapy sessions, which occur twice a week for 25 minutes. The United States is populated by numerous international cultures and communities. By studying the variations in speech and language patterns among the languages used within these cultures, more adequate resources can be made readily accessible to speech-language pathologists who provide accent modification therapy.
