Description
The purpose of this study is to assess student learning outcomes for researchers participating in a parallel research study termed Music First: A Butler University and Indiana State Department of Health Collaborative, Resident-Centered Care Study. Music First represents an interdisciplinary clinical research study designed to examine the influence of personalized music listening for elderly patients suffering from the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Among Music First Butler student researchers from pharmacy, music, and psychology, 44 voluntarily completed an academic survey before and after completion of the music listening study that evaluated their perceived learning experience. This SurveyMonkey® assessed learning outcomes pertaining to views on interdisciplinary research, statistics comprehension, American Psychiatric Association Practice Guidelines on the Use of Antipsychotics to Treat Agitation or Psychosis in Patients with Dementia, manuscript development, and professional poster presentations. Pharmacy student researchers also received educational tutorials throughout the project pertaining to these topics. After study completion, statistically significant (ps <0.05) improvements in student learning outcomes were observed for the majority of assessed content. Students’ perceptions on interprofessional research did not significantly improve but remained positive throughout the study. As a result of these preliminary findings, future research can assess student learning outcomes on a larger scale and to specifically analyze the utility of educational tutorials to compliment research exposure.
