Description

All it takes is the act of lighting and smoking that first cigarette to begin the addiction. The addiction to cigarettes, that often starts young and negatively affects everyone that is exposed, holds more challenges than most know. In 2005, a movement to make restaurants, workplaces and bars smoke free revolutionized and has continued to grow as 34 states are smoke free in both restaurants and workplaces, while 28 states are smoke free in bars. (Hawkins et al., 2016). The Smoke Free legislations made it harder for smokers to continue their habits, it did not stop many. Quitting smoking is one of the most formidable undertakings that the human race has faced that traps people both physically and psychologically. (Siegel, 2014) 443,000 People are estimated to die each year in the United States directly caused by smoking related diseases (Sondhi, 2010). It is important to convey that those who attempt to quit smoking do not do so with ease, but rather face many challenges along the way. In order for those suffering to succeed in quitting smoking, the challenges faced by that population need to be identified and understood by those trying to help them. Therefore, this quantitative study will administer the CSS-21 to adult smokers in Grant County, Indiana in hopes of understanding the barriers to quitting smoking. The obtained results will provide health care and social workers a deeper empathy and further understanding in order to develop more successful prevention, education, and intervention programs.
