Abstract
A study of seemingly similar concepts in different cultures and religions should avoid the temptation to simply equate them or to contrast them. The intention should be to understand them within their own environment, noting their distinctions or resemblances only as these may be needed to sharpen their significance in their own settings, without judging them by criteria external to their settings.
