Description
Fourteenth century Spain is obviously very different than seventeenth century Spain. These eras do have something in common, however. In 1335, Don Juan Manuel wrote a version of the legend "The Emperor's New Clothes" made famous by Hans Christian Anderson in the 1800s. A few centuries later, Miguel de Cervantes wrote El retablo de las maravillas, a short play centered not on invisible clothes, but on an invisible puppet show. At first glance, the stories just seem like a fairy tale with a moral. Yet, looking at the stories through a historical perspective, it is revealed that they reflect the ideas of society itself, as well as the authors' views on the society and government of the time. This presentation will be given in Spanish.
