Description

Clave is a distinctive rhythmic pattern that much of latin music is based around. For many genres and styles, it is a definitive feature. However, clave is not particular to just Latin music, and its surprising prevalence in American music demonstrates an unconsious Latin influence in popular music styles of the last fifty to sixty years.

This is most heavily apparent in the works of jazz musician Herbie Hancock, and while his usage of the pattern will be the focus of the presentation, the observation, argument, and presentation will extend to other artists and musical styles.
