Description

Background:Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death and third leading cause of cancer in both men and women in the United States. Prevention techniques and early detection are important for decreasing colorectal cancer risk. These techniques include lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, and available screenings to monitor for abnormal polyps or cancer growth. Phase I of the study was completed in 2011 after survey results were gathered to assess confidence levels in cancer related knowledge. The surveys showed that confidence levels regarding colorectal cancer screening knowledge rated the lowest.

Objective:To raise awareness for colon cancer prevention and educate patients on current prevention strategies.

Methods:Employees were surveyed in 2011 to assess the area of need for cancer screening education. The results of the survey were analyzed, indicating that employees had the least confidence in screening recommendations for colon cancer. An educational insert was developed for employees with information on lifestyle prevention, dietary prevention, risk factors, signs of colon cancer, and current screening tests. This insert is available for patients during annual health screenings or patient appointments. Personal health portfolio information regarding cancer prevention recommendations were also updated to increase employees' awareness of current health guidelines. In the future, the institution will host an educational luncheon that focuses on colon cancer screening recommendations and prevention strategies. A colon cancer awareness campaign will be developed for March 2014 via the institution's social media sites and blogs. As the project continues, more educational materials will be developed to raise awareness amongst employees.

Results and Conclusions: Phase II of the study is currently ongoing into 2014.
