Description
Background: Butler University offers the American Pharmacist Association's (APhA) Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery certification program to current 4th professional year pharmacy students and during the 3th professional year for pharmacy students graduating after 2014. Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery program teaches vaccine information, proper administration, basics of immunology, practice implementation, and legal/regulatory issues. APHA and Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists (SIDP) provide other programs where student pharmacists can become certified in other healthcare areas. APhA's other certification training programs include: Pharmacist and Patient-Centered Diabetes Care and Delivering Medication Therapy Management Services. SIDP provides training in Community Pharmacy-based Rapid Diagnostic Testing. This program delivers training on targeted disease states, physical assessment of a patient presenting to a community pharmacist, rapid diagnostic tests as well the business model to establish this service. These other programs are not currently provided and the student interest of these programs is unknown.
Study Objective: To evaluate the satisfaction and timing of the current certification program and the interest for additional certification programs to Butler University pharmacy curriculum.
Methods: The study was conducted using an online 10-15 question survey with the help of Survey Monkey. Varying surveys were sent to recent Butler pharmacy graduates and current Butler University pharmacy students. These specific surveys asked the participants their opinion using a Likert scale, yes or no option, and open-ended questions on the current certification program as well as their interest in other certification programs that could be provided.
Results: As of February 2014, the surveys were being sent to the alumni and students but data collection had not been completed.
Significance: If the majority of students are interested in additional certification programs, I will develop a plan to incorporate the programs within pharmacy curriculum.
