Description

The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a direct correlation between one's involvement in student organizations and the motivation to volunteer. Students who are involved in organizations are expected to volunteer more often. Also, I expect that involvement in student organizations will be related to motivation for volunteering. A survey was administered to a convenience sample of 150 students. The survey contained questions asking about students' motivations for volunteering, their previous experience with volunteering, and their involvement in student organizations. Students who are involved in organizations are expected to list required volunteering as their main motivation. On the other hand, non-involved students are expected to say that volunteering lets them look good or feel good about helping others. These non-involved students are also expected to note that they choose to volunteer because it gives them career experience or because they enjoy the work itself. It is expected that the end result will show that those involved in student organizations will volunteer more often but their motivations will also be skewed due to requirements made by these organizations. The implications of this study for colleges are discussed. Colleges are now requiring students to volunteer more often. Because of this, it's good for them to understand how to motivate a student to participate in volunteer activities.
