Description

One of the top ten reasons prospective students consider a university is to participate in sporting events. However, some sports receive more support than others. This study will look at what makes certain sports more popular and how that can be applied to increase attendance and participation in all sporting events and therefore promote a university. The goal of this study is to establish what undergraduate students want from university sporting events. Focus groups consisting of five to seven participants per group were conducted using students from an introductory psychology course. The students were volunteers who signed up for the study to receive a credit for their course. Participants were asked a series of questions regarding what draws them to sporting events, what they would like to see or experience at these events, and any improvements or changes that could be made to make the events more inviting. A related survey was conducted to expand on the information collected during the focus groups. The focus groups will be recorded and analyzed for emerging themes and surveys were analyzed using t-tests. Results from the focus groups indicated that students desire themes and group mentality when attending sporting events.
