Description
This paper examines the sexualization of characters in Marvel and Detective Comics (DC) animated movies. A content analysis was used to assess the amount and types of sexualization that occur within 8 (4 from each company) of the animated movies these two companies have produced. Three categories for sexualization were used, Sexualized Poses, Sexual Comments and Sexual Outfits, with specific examples of each category being looked at. Results show that both companies do sexualize their characters. However, DC sexualized their characters more than Marvel in the animated movies. The most common form of sexualization in both companies was body hugging or skin tight clothing. Results also showed that Marvel movies seem to be geared towards younger audiences while DC movies seem geared towards older males.
