Description

This study analyzed how membership within a sorority impacts an individual’s conception of beauty in terms of body image and clothing choice. This research was based on document analysis. The main hypothesis of this study stated that membership in a sorority does affect a member’s standard of beauty. Research found that body image plays a role in individual clothing choices. Results show that women in sororities tended to view their bodies differently than non-sorority members. They are also more likely to dress similarly, as well as have higher rates of body dissatisfaction. Membership within a sorority caused an individual to think of their body differently. In fact, in certain instances, sororities dictated what the member is supposed to wear. The findings of the research conducted supported the hypothesis in saying that there is variation in conceptions of beauty among sorority members.
